Beautiful ≠ Toxic

Hi Beautiful People,

This week I want to talk about toxic people. I have a horrible habit of overthinking what other people say or think about me, and having allowed toxic people in my life has wrecked my mental health. When someone steals your sparkle or joy or whatever you call your happiness, life becomes confusing, and frustrating and dark and no one should allow this in their life.

Toxic people can come in the form of a stranger, friend, family, colleague, significant other, etc. and while some may not realize they are toxic, that doesn’t mean they have a right to stay in your life. Especially, after you have told them how their actions affect you. I am here to tell you that it is okay to let toxic people go. As Marie Kondo asks “Does it spark joy?” Now obviously, she is talking about items, but why can’t this question pertain to people? If a person doesn’t bring you joy, why keep them around?

I don’t want to confuse anyone. Another person should not determine your happiness and you should never rely on someone else to make you happy. You and only you can achieve happiness for yourself and it is not fair to burden someone with the task of keeping you happy. But, being around certain people bring different feelings and if the feeling you get from someone is in anyway negative, you are not obligated to stay around, even if they are “family.”

In all honesty, I believe youth have the hardest time realizing a person is toxic, especially at a young age. They have this new friend and they’re so happy to have this friend, but then come home and feel unhappy after seeing them, but they cannot comprehend why. Toxicity can start at such a young age and if we help our youth understand what toxicity looks like and then how to deal with it when they are in that situation, our youth will be able to navigate their relationships better as they get older and can keep their sparkle intact!

Now I leave you with the very relevant hit, Toxic by Britney Spears. Good luck getting it out of your head now.

I see your sparkle and it is bright!
